Managing school refusal post Covid
using relationships to enhance communication and collaboration

13 Sept. 2024 – 9am to 4.30pm – Epping Club, Epping

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted Australian school-age children’s mental health, with high psychological distress rising from 13% in 2018 to 20% in 2021 and self-harm rates increasing by nearly 30%. Mental health-related emergency visits grew by 33% between 2020 and 2022. School refusal also spiked post-pandemic, characterized by emotional distress and depressive symptoms in affected students. Schools are crucial for early detection and support, emphasizing relational connectedness. The National Senate Report (August 2023) called for comprehensive strategies to address school refusal. Collaboration among parents, educators, mental health professionals, and community organizations is essential for fostering student well-being and resilience.
